Yasuke: The Original "Afro Samurai"
Most of us are familiar with the "Afro Samurai" animated films, but it wasn't until recently that I had come across the fact that there really was such a character. Of sorts.
While he may not have been the the hyper-cool guy from the animated features, there really was a man from Africa that earned the title of Samurai, and lived in Japan around the late 16th century. He was originally from Mozambique and arrived in Japan as a servant of an Italian Jesuit.
There is a pretty decent article over on the Wikipedia page. If you want to know the details, go check it out. Not much is known about the man so there isn't a whole lot to say. Maybe in time more records will be unearthed and translated.
